Junk Removal0What Can You Throw in the Trash in Solon?

Welcome to Solon!

We love when we get to work in the Solon area. The city is full of beautiful yards, great architecture, and is one they offer residents a ton of services that other local communities just don’t get. This guide will help you understand how to properly dispose of waste and recycling, along with seasonal programs to manage yard waste, leaves, and more.

Regular Trash Collection

  • Collection Day: Trash is collected curbside once a week, Tuesday through Friday, depending on your area’s route.
  • Cart Placement: Set your trash cart at the curb by 7:00 AM on collection day and no earlier than 7:00 PM the night before. Place it at least 3 feet from obstacles like mailboxes or cars, with the arrows on the lid pointing toward the street.
  • Second Cart Option: A second cart can be rented from the city for $70. Households are limited to two carts.
  • Bagging Requirement: All trash must be bagged before placing it in the cart to avoid spills and littering.

Recycling Collection

  • Collection Day: Recycling is picked up curbside on the same day as trash collection.
  • Accepted Materials:
    • Paper: Newspapers, magazines, office paper, and junk mail.
    • Cardboard: Flattened boxes (e.g., cereal boxes, shipping boxes).
    • Glass: Bottles and jars.
    • Metal: Aluminum and steel cans.
    • Plastic: Bottles and containers labeled #1 and #2.
  • Non-Accepted Items: Avoid placing these in your recycling cart:
    • Ceramics and drinking glasses
    • Scrap metal
    • Hoses, ropes, or strings
    • Styrofoam and plastic toys
    • Shredded paper (can be dropped off separately)
  • Important Note: Place recyclables loose in the cart, not in bags.

Seasonal Yard and Brush Waste Collection

  • Yard Waste: Yard waste is collected curbside year-round. Use yard waste bags and place them alongside your trash cart.
  • Brush: Brush should be bundled and placed curbside, following size restrictions (typically under 4 feet in length and 2 feet in diameter).

Leaf Collection (Fall Only)

During the fall, residents can rake leaves to the curb for easy collection. The program runs for several weeks each year, with specific collection dates provided based on your address.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

Solon provides a drop-off location at the Service Department for items that shouldn’t go in the trash. Accepted items include:

  • Paints, stains, and varnishes
  • Automotive fluids like motor oil and antifreeze
  • Pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
  • Drop-Off Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Mattress and Carpet Disposal

  • Mattresses: Wrap mattresses in plastic and seal them with packing tape before placing them curbside. Unwrapped mattresses will not be collected.
  • Carpets: Cut carpets into rolls no longer than 4 feet, tie them securely, and place them at the curb.

Large Item Disposal and Dumpster Services

Solon residents can dispose of large items like furniture and appliances by bringing them to the Service Department during designated drop-off hours. Alternatively, the city offers a dumpster drop-off calendar for residents to dispose of larger quantities of waste.

Holiday Collection Schedule

Collection days may shift around major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Plan for delays on these weeks, as collection might be pushed a day later.
